ANDREA MAJOR

Owner & Artistic Director

Andrea Herbert Major is well known, throughout Massachusetts, as an accomplished dancer, choreographer and teacher. She began her dance training at the age of three under the tutelage of Mildred Kennedy Bradic. Ms. Herbert Major graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. After receiving her degree, Andrea continued her studies at the Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York.

Andrea began offering classes at the Roxbury YMCA in an experimental program for that organization. As a result of this experience, she realized that young inner city children needed to be exposed to the performing arts. This prompted her to open Andrea’s School of Dance in 1967.  Over the years, the school grew from three to several hundred students, inspiring Andrea to change the name to The Roxbury Center for the Performing Arts in 1972.

Over the years Andrea has received numerous honors, awards and citations from civic organizations, religious groups and corporations recognizing her contributions to inner city youth in the community.  Andrea is committed to instilling in her students an appreciation for the performing arts.
